Overview
A true one-off, printed onto the wall
A bespoke printed mural is artwork made for one wall and one wall only. We take your image, a photograph, an illustration, a pattern, a piece of commissioned art, prepare it at the exact dimensions of the surface, and print it directly onto the plaster. It is not a repeat pattern trimmed to fit and it is not a set of panels hung side by side.
The defining characteristic is the absence of joins. Because the printer travels the wall and lays a continuous image up to 4 metres high with no limit on length, there is nothing to align. Skies do not step, faces do not shift half a millimetre at a seam, and there is no vertical line running through the middle of the composition where two drops meet.
Compared with hand-painted murals the difference is time, cost and repeatability. A hand-painted wall takes an artist days or weeks on site and can never be recreated exactly. A printed mural is completed in a day, reproduces the artwork exactly as approved, and can be reprinted identically in another location if you need it again.
Durability is what makes it practical in real rooms. The cured surface is washable and scratch resistant, so a mural can sit in a hallway, a nursery, a restaurant or a stairwell rather than only in a room nobody touches. Indoors it holds for around 10 years; outdoors, on suitable surfaces, around 5.
Why professional delivery matters
- Resolution has to be checked against true wall size: an image that works on screen may fail at 4 metres, and only measurement tells you.
- Composition changes at scale: focal points, cropping and eye-level detail all need planning against the room, not the file.
- Surface preparation determines how the ink keys and how the finished mural ages.
- Vertical printing at height requires calibrated, tracked equipment to keep the image square across the full wall.
The cost of leaving it
Why most large wall artwork disappoints
The usual failure is scale. People choose an image that looks perfect at postcard size, blow it up to 3 metres and discover it was never sharp enough: soft edges, visible compression artefacts, a horizon that sits awkwardly behind the sofa. The wall then reads as cheap even though the idea was good, and nobody wants to admit it enough to redo it.
The second failure is the join. Panelled wallpaper murals rely on perfect hanging, perfect walls and perfect trimming. Any deviation shows as a line straight through the artwork, and it shows most on skies, skin tones and gradients, exactly the areas people choose murals for. Over time those seams also lift, which turns a subtle line into an obvious defect.
The third is longevity. A mural that cannot be cleaned ends up marked within months in a hallway, a nursery or a restaurant, and once it is marked it cannot be repaired locally. You are then choosing between living with it and replacing the whole wall, which is why so many statement walls quietly get painted over within two years.
Common mistakes we are called in to fix
-
Sourcing images from a web page
Screen-resolution images cannot carry architectural scale. We check every supplied file against real wall dimensions before proofing.
-
Choosing artwork without looking at the room
Sight lines, furniture, doorways and light sources all change what the mural actually looks like in use. We plan the crop around the room.
-
Assuming a mural has to be delicate
People often avoid murals in busy areas unnecessarily. A cured printed mural is washable and scratch resistant, so hallways and nurseries are entirely reasonable locations.
-
Skipping the proof
The to-scale proof is where crop, colour and detail are confirmed. Approving from a thumbnail is how a mural ends up with the subject cut in half by a door frame.
Our process
A five-step system, so you know exactly what happens and when
-
Step 1
Free site visit and wall survey
We come to you, measure the wall, check it for flatness, damp, dust and existing coatings, and confirm the printable area. Our machine prints up to 4 metres high and unlimited in length, so the survey is where we work out exactly how your artwork maps onto the surface you have.
-
Step 2
Artwork preparation and digital proof
Send us your own file or let us create the design. We scale it to the true wall dimensions, correct resolution, colour and crop, then issue a to-scale digital proof. Nothing is printed until you have signed that proof off, so there are no surprises on the wall.
-
Step 3
Surface preparation and machine set-up
The wall is cleaned and prepared, the printer is set up against it and calibrated, and RAMS are supplied for the job. Set-up is quiet, contained and needs no scaffolding for standard heights.
-
Step 4
Direct-to-wall printing with instant UV cure
GREENGUARD Gold certified Nazdar 270 series UV inks are printed straight onto the wall and cured instantly as the head passes. There is no drying time, no solvent smell and no plastic film, so the image is finished the moment the last pass completes.
-
Step 5
Inspection, sign-off and clean handover
We walk the finished wall with you, check colour and edges, clear the area and leave the space usable straight away. The cured print is washable and scratch resistant, and lasts roughly 10 years indoors or 5 years outdoors.

Bespoke Wall Graphics & Murals in real spaces

Watch the process
Bespoke murals at full wall scale
Bespoke wall graphics are printed one wall at a time, at whatever scale the space demands. Photographic subjects are among the most demanding work we do: at wall size, any loss of sharpness or colour accuracy is immediately obvious, so files are prepared and profiled specifically for direct-to-wall printing.
The footage below shows finished bespoke murals in real environments, photographic animal artwork and a healthcare waiting room. Each was produced for a single client and a single wall, which is exactly what separates bespoke mural printing from off-the-shelf wallpaper.
In detail
Artwork, surfaces and what works at scale
Preparation begins with the file. We assess the supplied artwork against the measured wall to establish effective resolution at final size, then correct colour profile, sharpen appropriately for viewing distance and plan the crop. Where an image is close but not sufficient, upscaling and retouching through our mural design service can rescue it; where it is genuinely too small, we say so rather than printing something you will regret.
Surface choice affects the result. Smooth skimmed plaster and matt-painted plasterboard give the crispest reproduction and are the default for photographic work. Textured plaster, brick, block and render can be printed and often look excellent for graphic or typographic murals, but texture will show through fine detail, so we discuss the effect before committing.
Viewing distance drives design decisions. A mural in a narrow corridor is read from a metre away, which rewards detail and punishes softness. A mural across an open restaurant is read from eight metres, where bold composition matters more than fine grain. We set the crop and detail level for how the wall will actually be seen.
Because the print is part of the wall, integration with the room is straightforward: artwork can run behind fixtures, wrap around light switches and continue up to ceiling and skirting lines without the fussy trimming that applied coverings need.
Residential projects
At home, murals are usually a single decisive wall: behind a bed, along a hallway, in a garden room or across a stairwell. Because there is no seam and no repeat, the result reads as a bespoke commission rather than a wall covering, and it can be cleaned without damaging the image.
Commercial projects
For hospitality, leisure and retail the mural is a commercial asset; it drives photographs, social posts and dwell time. Durability and downtime matter as much as design, and instant curing means a venue can be printed after service and open as normal the next day.

Questions
Bespoke Wall Graphics & Murals: the questions we are asked before every job
How much does a bespoke mural cost?
It is priced per wall, based on size, surface condition, access and the amount of artwork preparation needed. The site visit and quote are free, so you get a firm figure before committing.
Can you use my own photograph?
Yes, provided the resolution carries at wall size. We check that against your actual measurements first and tell you honestly if it will not hold up: our design service can often upscale or rebuild the image.
How long does a mural take to install?
Typically one day for a single wall, including preparation, printing and inspection. Curing is instant, so there is no additional waiting.
Will there be any visible joins?
No. We print up to 4 metres high and unlimited in length as a single continuous image, which is the main advantage over panelled wallpaper murals.
Can a printed mural be cleaned?
Yes. The cured surface is washable and scratch resistant, so it suits hallways, nurseries, restaurants and other busy spaces rather than only low-traffic rooms.
How long will a mural last?
Around 10 years indoors and around 5 years outdoors under normal conditions.
Is it safe for a child's bedroom or nursery?
Yes. The Nazdar 270 series inks are GREENGUARD Gold certified for indoor air quality and cure instantly, so there is no lingering smell and the room can be used the same day.
What if I want to remove it later?
The wall is simply repainted. There is nothing to strip, so you avoid the plaster damage that comes with removing wallpaper or vinyl.
Can you print onto brick or textured walls?
Often yes, though texture becomes part of the finished look. We assess the surface at the site visit and explain what the result will be before you decide.
Do you cover my area?
We are based in Essex and cover London, Southend-on-Sea, Basildon, Chelmsford, Grays, Rayleigh, Romford and the wider South East, and travel nationwide for larger projects.
