Overview
Design that is built for the wall, not the screen
Our mural design service covers everything that happens between an idea and a print-ready file: concept, sourcing, layout, retouching, upscaling, colour preparation and a to-scale proof. It exists because most artwork problems are not printing problems; they are file problems that only become visible once the image is three metres wide.
You can come to us at any point. Some clients arrive with a finished, print-ready file and just need it checked and proofed. Some arrive with a rough idea, a brand palette and a photograph of the wall. Some arrive with a low-resolution image they love and need to know whether it can be rescued. All three are normal starting points.
Designing for a wall is different from designing for print or screen. The composition has to work at both eight metres and eighty centimetres, key elements must sit clear of doors, switches and furniture, and detail has to be pitched at the real viewing distance. We design against the measured wall, not a blank artboard.
The proof is the safeguard. You receive a to-scale visual showing exactly how the artwork maps onto your wall, and nothing is printed until it is approved. That single step removes almost every expensive mistake in large-format wall artwork.
Why professional delivery matters
- Effective resolution at wall size is a calculation, not an impression, getting it wrong is only discovered after printing.
- Colour management between screen, brand references and cured ink needs proofing to be reliable.
- Upscaling and retouching well is a specific skill; poor upscaling creates soft, plastic-looking detail at scale.
- Layout against real architecture avoids focal points landing behind radiators, doors and desks.
The cost of leaving it
What happens when artwork is not prepared properly
An unprepared file does not fail politely. Compression artefacts that are invisible on a laptop become blocky patches a metre across. A slightly soft image becomes obviously blurred. A logo saved as a small raster file develops ragged edges that everyone notices and nobody can unsee. None of this can be fixed on the wall; it has to be fixed in the file.
Cropping errors are just as costly. Artwork designed to a different aspect ratio gets stretched, squashed or cut, and the part that gets lost is usually the part that mattered. Faces sit half behind a door frame, a horizon runs through a light switch, and the composition that worked on screen collapses in the room.
Then there is the approval problem. Without a to-scale proof, stakeholders sign off a thumbnail and imagine different things. Once it is printed, the disagreement is expensive: repainting and reprinting a wall is cheap compared with vinyl removal, but it is still a cost and a delay that a proper proofing stage would have avoided completely.
Common mistakes we are called in to fix
-
Judging a file by how it looks on a monitor
Screen viewing hides the softness and compression that wall scale exposes. We calculate effective resolution against the measured wall instead.
-
Using a logo lifted from a website
Web logos are small raster files. We need vector artwork or a high-resolution original to keep edges sharp at architectural scale.
-
Designing without the wall's dimensions
Artwork made to the wrong ratio always loses something in the crop. We start from measurements taken on site.
-
Approving without a to-scale proof
The proof is where crop, colour and detail are agreed. Skipping it moves the risk from the design stage to the printed wall.
Our process
A five-step system, so you know exactly what happens and when
-
Step 1
Free site visit and wall survey
We come to you, measure the wall, check it for flatness, damp, dust and existing coatings, and confirm the printable area. Our machine prints up to 4 metres high and unlimited in length, so the survey is where we work out exactly how your artwork maps onto the surface you have.
-
Step 2
Artwork preparation and digital proof
Send us your own file or let us create the design. We scale it to the true wall dimensions, correct resolution, colour and crop, then issue a to-scale digital proof. Nothing is printed until you have signed that proof off, so there are no surprises on the wall.
-
Step 3
Surface preparation and machine set-up
The wall is cleaned and prepared, the printer is set up against it and calibrated, and RAMS are supplied for the job. Set-up is quiet, contained and needs no scaffolding for standard heights.
-
Step 4
Direct-to-wall printing with instant UV cure
GREENGUARD Gold certified Nazdar 270 series UV inks are printed straight onto the wall and cured instantly as the head passes. There is no drying time, no solvent smell and no plastic film, so the image is finished the moment the last pass completes.
-
Step 5
Inspection, sign-off and clean handover
We walk the finished wall with you, check colour and edges, clear the area and leave the space usable straight away. The cured print is washable and scratch resistant, and lasts roughly 10 years indoors or 5 years outdoors.
Benefits
What you get out of it, stated plainly
No unpleasant surprises
A to-scale proof shows exactly how the artwork sits on your wall before printing begins.
Files rescued where possible
Careful upscaling and retouching can often make a treasured image work at wall scale, and we tell you when it cannot.
Brand-accurate output
Colour is prepared against your brand references and confirmed at proof, not guessed on site.
Composition planned for the room
Focal points, sight lines and architectural features are designed around, not discovered afterwards.
Faster approvals
One clear visual for stakeholders replaces rounds of imagination and misunderstanding.
Ready for reprint
Approved files are kept, so the same artwork can be reproduced identically on another wall or another site.

Mural Design Service in real spaces

Watch the process
Designed murals brought to life on the wall
Our mural design service starts with a blank wall and a brief, not a stock library. Artwork is drawn and composed for the exact dimensions of your space, then printed directly onto the surface so the design lands precisely where it was intended: around doors, switches, skirting and corners.
The videos below show designed murals in two very different settings: an exterior art studio wall and a school playground. Both were designed for their location, and both demonstrate why designing to the wall, rather than resizing an existing image, is what makes a mural feel purpose-built.
In detail
Inside the artwork process
Every project starts with measurement. Wall height, length, obstructions, socket and switch positions, skirting and ceiling lines are recorded at the site visit, and the artboard is built to those exact dimensions. Design decisions are then made in context rather than in the abstract.
File assessment follows. We check pixel dimensions against final print size, examine compression and noise at 100 per cent, look at colour space, and identify any elements, logos, type, fine linework, that need to be rebuilt as vectors to stay sharp. Where clients supply photography, we advise on the highest-resolution original available, which is often a much larger file than the one first sent.
Where artwork needs creating, we work from brief, brand palette, reference imagery and the purpose of the space. Typographic murals are set for legibility at distance; photographic compositions are chosen for how they behave when cropped to a wide wall; pattern and abstract work is scaled so that the repeat, if any, does not read as wallpaper.
Colour preparation accounts for the substrate. A matt wall absorbs and reflects differently from paper stock, so we prepare files with that in mind and confirm critical brand colours at proof stage. The approved proof then becomes the reference against which the finished wall is inspected at handover.
Residential projects
Homeowners most often bring a personal photograph or a piece of art they love. The work is usually assessment, upscaling and careful cropping so that the meaning of the image survives the change of shape and scale.
Commercial projects
Commercial projects add brand governance and stakeholder approval. We prepare artwork against brand guidelines, produce proofs suitable for circulation and sign-off, and retain approved files so later sites match the first without redesign.

Questions
Mural Design Service: the questions we are asked before every job
How much does mural design cost?
It depends on how much work the artwork needs, from a straightforward check and proof through to full concept design. We scope it at the free consultation and quote before starting.
Can you use a photo from my phone?
Sometimes. It depends on the original file size and the wall dimensions. We calculate effective resolution at true scale and tell you clearly whether it will hold up.
What file formats should I send?
Send the largest original you have: uncompressed TIFF, PSD, high-quality JPEG, or vector PDF, AI or EPS for logos and type. Avoid files pulled from websites or messaging apps.
Will I see the design before it is printed?
Always. You receive a to-scale digital proof and nothing is printed until you have approved it.
How long does the design stage take?
A simple check and proof can be turned around quickly; full concept design takes longer and depends on how many rounds of feedback are needed. We agree the timeline up front.
Can you match our brand colours exactly?
We prepare artwork against your brand references and confirm critical colours at the proof stage, so what prints is what has been approved.
Do you keep the artwork afterwards?
Yes. Approved files are retained so the same design can be reprinted identically on another wall or at another site.
Can you design for an awkwardly shaped wall?
Yes, that is exactly why we measure first. Doors, switches, radiators and changes of plane are all designed around rather than worked around on the day.
Do I have to use your printing service too?
Design and print work together in our process, because the proof is prepared for our machine, inks and the specific wall we surveyed.
What if I do not like the first design?
Feedback rounds are part of the process. Nothing goes to print until you have signed off a proof you are happy with.
